Y-STR (Paternal Lineage) Test
Two or more males can take a Y-STR/paternal lineage test to determine whether or not they have a common ancestor through the father's side of the family. Results of a paternal lineage test can be used to infer biological relationships and provide additional evidence in inheritance and Social Security benefit claims, family history studies, and reunions among adoptees and their biological relatives.
The paternal lineage test uses genetic markers (specific portions called short tandem repeats, or STRs) on the Y chromosome, which is passed on from father to son relatively unchanged through several generations. Males from the same paternal line (on the father’s side of the family) will have the same Y-STR pattern. In a paternity situation, alleged fathers who do not have the same Y-STR as the child are excluded from being the biological father.
