Grandparentage Test

When you need to determine a child's biological father, but the alleged father is unavailable for testing, you can still find answers through grandparentage testing. The alleged father's biological parents can be tested together with the child to find out if he/she is their biological grandchild.

A child inherits DNA in equal parts from the biological mother and biological father. In a grandparentage test, the alleged father's contribution to the child's DNA is tested to see if they match DNA from the tested grandparents, which the alleged father would have inherited and passed on to the child.

In a grandparentage test, the child, mother, and alleged grandparents are tested. Motherless grandparentage testing may also be performed, but because this requires more extensive analytical procedures, the testing fee and turnaround time are higher. Sample collection is performed using buccal swabs (cotton-like swabs rubbed against the inside of the mouth) are used to obtain loose cheek cells for DNA testing.
